Privacy policy

Basic policy

The aim of the Japanese Learning System of the Education Center for Japanese Language and Culture, Institute for Liberal Arts and Sciences, of Kyoto University (from here on referred to as “this system”), is to support educational and research activities. This system is maintained in accordance with and adheres to the privacy policy of the Kyoto University homepage.

Collection of personal information and its goal and limits on usage

Information that identifies an individual, such as an individual's name, email address, date of birth, and residential address, is not collected by this system.

 

However, in the site questionnaire, information such as nationality, point of access, occupational or educational status, history of studying Japanese and level of Japanese may be collected for the purpose of improving the learning exercises and explanations used in this system.  This personal information will not be used for reasons other than this purpose.

 

In the case where email address and other contact details are entered in the optional fields, etc. of the site questionnaire, this information will not be used except to reply to the sender.

About cookies

In this system cookies are used in order to make it more convenient for the user, and in order to determine how this system is being used. Cookies are random numbers used to identify the user's computer and are saved to the hard-disk drive through the web browser. On this system cookies are used in order to enable the following functions.

  • To memorize the selected language and have the same language displayed even if you move to a different page.
  • To allow each user to be identified and calculated even if more than one user starts the same lesson simultaneously.
  • To understand which lessons an individual user has accessed.
  • To ensure that if the questionnaire has been completed once, the user will not be prompted to complete it again until the browser has closed.
  • To determine the time required for a lesson to be completed.
  • Etc.

When the user’s web browser is closed, cookies are automatically deleted from the user's computer. However, depending on the browser, there are cases in which cookies are retained. In such cases, cookies can be deleted through the web browser's options. Please refer to the browser's help guide or manual in the use of these options.   

Analysis of user access

We utilize Google Analytics in order to analyze user access of this system. As a result, the host name, browser type, referrer, language and other such information of the user who accesses the system is transmitted to the Google Analytics server and analyzed so that it can be displayed as a report.

 

At the Education Center for Japanese Language and Culture, this report is utilized as the basis for understanding the situation of the user and in order to improve the contents of this system. In addition, after statistical processing of user access data, we may publish such data, such as in a written report, in order to report on the development of this system and its user access both within the University and to the public at large.
